People On The Move

Excerpts from the People on the Move section of the March/April, 2008 edition of Atlantic Business Magazine.

Michael Armstrong has been hired by Extreme Group as VP, director of Client Services. Armstrong most recently spent six years with DraftFCB where he led accounts such as TD Bank Financial Group, Canada Bread and SC Johnson. He previously worked for Halifax's Bristol Group, BBDO Canada in Toronto and Vancouver and Leo Burnett in Toronto.

Larry Bootland has left the bright lights of Calgary to take on a position as director of operations for Trampoline Creative Inc. in Halifax. An accomplished designer and project manager, he has 12 years of agency experience in everything from building consumer focused websites for retail and property development sectors, to online contest development, to B2B web application tools. Formed in August 2004, Trampoline bills itself as the region's first strategic creative boutique.

Roman M. Coba has been named chief information officer with the Global Technology Centre of McCain Foods Limited. In the past, Coba has worked for Honeywell Information Systems, Purolator Courier, UBA Trading Company and Wal-Mart Canada Incorporated. His most recent position was as senior vice president Information Technology and CIO for Loblaw Companies Ltd.

John Crosbie has been appointed as Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador. An Officer of the Order of Canada, Mr. Crosbie has for decades been one of the most colourful and influential political figures in the country. In recent years, the former federal Minister of Finance has been an author (writing a political autobiography), political commentator, lawyer and Chancellor of Memorial University of Newfoundland.

A. Mark David, Q.C. has joined the Halifax office of Cox & Palmer. David is also a member of the Multi-Disciplinary Partnerships Task Force of the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society as well as the chair of the Business Law Subsection (Nova Scotia branch), Canadian Bar Association. Cox & Palmer has more than 170 lawyers working in offices across Atlantic Canada.

Tony Fernando is Extreme Group's new chief financial officer, stationed in their Toronto office. Most recently employed with Draft FCB, Fernando has spent the past two decades working in several different agencies, in local and multinational environments. Extreme Group, which originated in Halifax about 10 years ago, recently expanded to Toronto.

J.D. (Don) Gardiner has been elected as president of the Canadian Snowbird Association. Gardiner is the founder, president and CEO of the Gardiner Group of Companies (an Atlantic Canadian commercial and real estate company). Founded in 1992, the Canadian Snowbird Association is a 70,000 member national not-for-profit advocacy organization dedicated to defending and improving the rights and privileges of Canadian travelers.

Eleanor Humphries, former president and CEO of the Halifax International Airport Authority and member of Atlantic Business Magazine's Top 50 CEO Hall of Fame, has accepted a five-year term as vice-chairperson of the Transportation Appeal Tribunal of Canada. The Transportation Appeal Tribunal of Canada provides an independent review process for anyone who has been given notice of an administrative or enforcement action taken by the Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, railway safety inspectors or the Canadian Transportation Industry.

Jerry Byrne, president and CEO of D.F. Barnes Ltd, announced that four new people (Tim MacEwen, Ellyn Lyle, Hilary Hynes and Amy Warren), have joined his management team. As the new vice president of Strategic Development, MacEwen will be responsible for leading the development and implementation of corporate and business unit strategies. Lyle, who takes over as vice president of Organization Development, will be in charge of staff development, quality program management, leadership development and training services. Human resource functions, meanwhile, will come under the direction of Human Resources manager Hilary Hynes. And internal/external communications strategy will devolve to Amy Warren. Noting that D.F. Barnes has grown from 10 to 500 employees over the past five years, Byrnes says that the new hires will position the metal fabrication, manufacturing and services contractor to take advantage of future opportunities.

Peter Mallette has been promoted to assistant news director with CTV Atlantic. After beginning his broadcasting career with CTV approximately 30 years ago in Ontario, he moved to CTV Atlantic (then ATV) in 1995. For the past 12 years, he has been a reporter, anchor and producer for CTV Atlantic; his on-air replacement has not been announced.

Steve Palmer has been named co-CEO of Remsoft Inc., a Fredericton-based technology company that creates software for sustainable management planning. Palmer will share executive responsibilities with Remsoft president and co-CEO, Andrea Feunekes. His primary role will be on expanding the company's growth in the areas of Business Intelligence and Predictive Analytics.

Kevin Skanes and Jamie Veinot have signed on as senior consultants with the Halifax office of David Aplin Recruiting. Skanes' specialty is recruiting accounting and finance professionals while Veinot's niche is in placing information technology professionals. David Aplin Recruiting, a Canadian-owned company and provider of Canadian recruitment services, was founded in Alberta in 1975.

Christa Steeves and Ernie Brake have left Extreme (Halifax) to join Target Marketing & Communications Inc. as (respectively) account group director and senior account manager. Both Christa and Ernie have years of experience working for national and international clients like Research in Motion, Bell Aliant, Atlantic Lottery, Empire Theatres and Toyota. Target is a full-service advertising agency and brand architecture firm based in St. John's, Newfoundland.

Clayton Van Esch has been appointed RBC's regional vice president of Newfoundland and Labrador. With 21 years experience in the financial services industry, he has held positions of increasing responsibility in various divisions across Canada. Most recently, he was the senior manager, Strategy for RBC's Canadian Residential Mortgage business in the bank's head office in Toronto.
