Meet the New Nostradamus
Witty, wise and irreverent, New Brunswick's Mario Thériault is making waves. His Moncton company, ShiftCentral, is one of the most respected market intelligence outfits in the business. The question: Can he predict his own future?
By Alec Bruce
Asked to explain the mechanics of his business, Mario Thériault, the wisecracking president of the most successful market intelligence firm in New Brunswick, performs like a comic with an open mike.
"You know, that's a very good question," grins the 45-year-old employer of 14 highly skilled professionals, each chained to their respective computers most days (and some nights). "I have absolutely no idea. I was hoping you would tell me."
"No...hah," blurts the hapless reporter. "I'm wondering what 'market intelligence' means, exactly."
"Hey, me too. But I'm pretty sure it's the opposite of market stupidity. I'm guessing it would be difficult to sell that particular brand statement."
"Yeah, funny. Seriously, though, how do you make something like this pay off?"
"Seriously, I've been struggling with that. I mean there's got to be a way to make a buck off this whole information thing. Am I right?"
Thériault, it's safe to say, does not like to be pegged down, which could be a function of his eclectic genius.
