Become the change you want to see
By John Risley
My last article spoke of the need to differentiate public policy in Atlantic Canada as a tool of economic development. I maintain the region's future success cannot be assured on the back of following policies pursued by others, but only by charting a course or courses we can call our own. Health care and education, as the most important pieces of public policy, are great and necessary places to start.
It is hugely important to the success of any overarching strategy involving either of these responsibilities that the average Atlantic Canadian accept their role at an individual level. Ownership of such responsibility must begin with awareness, recognition for the make-up of costs and the value of personal intervention. I don't believe for a second there isn't an adult in the region who doesn't understand diet and exercise play a vital role in promoting and maintaining good health. Why then do we have some of the highest obesity rates in the country and why are we guilty of allowing such a disgraceful statistic to apply to our youth population? Despite its obvious sensitivities, this is a tragic problem which needs much more visibility in order to encourage immediate attention.
